Tasting Notes

Background: Located in Valgatara in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico region, brothers Aldo and Luca Degani are a generation of growers running a small, dynamic winery in their simple cellar. Founded in 1970, the winery produces only 5 wines; approximately 40,000 bottles annually. Year over year, their adherence to the local traditions demonstrates that quality depends primarily on what nature provides. According to Gambero Rosso, one of the major wine publications in Italy, “they amaze us by regularly turning out great results, vintage after vintage. Wines of high quality and lashings of personality.”

Vineyards: The Degani brothers own 6 hectares of vineyards in Marano and Fumane, in the heart of the Classico region, re-planted over 25 years ago. The vineyards are between 150-180 metres above sea level, with rows running north-south for maximum sun exposure. La Rosta is a special part of the vineyard holdings, which provides even riper grapes in top vintages.

This is a traditional style of Amarone – a blend of 50% Corvina and 40% Rondinella grapes, plus 10% Molinara. The grapes are hand-picked then placed in special flat wooden boxes to dry naturally for about 4-months, thus concentrating the sugars by 25-30%. Around December/January, the grapes are crushed and fermentation begins in large cement tubs. After 15-20 days the must is transferred to stainless steel tanks for 6 months, and then aged for 18-24 months in small French-oak barrels before bottling. 15% alc./vol.
Approximately 7,000 bottles were made of this wine.

Our tasting note: The wine has an intense ruby-garnet colour, with aromas and flavours of dried wild fruit, prune, and roasted chestnut with anise and dark chocolate notes. Balancing acidity and well-integrated tannins; the wine is dry and full-bodied, with a warm lingering finish. It’s a complex wine that evolves in the glass over time – we recommend decanting to help it open up.

Menu match: Recommended with red meat (grilled or braised) and game, but also a good pairing with aged cheese.
