Tasting Notes

Located in Cuzcurrita de Rio Tirón (in La Rioja Alta), Bodegas Tobía (pronounced toe-BEE-ya) is an artisanal winery owned and operated by one of Spain’s top winemakers, Oscar Tobía. Oscar holds a Master’s degree in Oenology and Viticulture and is considered part of Rioja’s new generation of winemakers who combine professionalism, the spirit to embrace regional traditions, and the best of what new technology can offer.
Family-owned vineyards constitute 30 hectares, with a further 55 hectares coming from controlled local vineyards. Vineyards are planted to Tempranillo (73%), Garnacha (15%), Viura (8%), and Malvasia (3%). Production of the winery began in 1995.

Total production is approximately 500,000 bottles from a new state-of-the-art winery. In the cellar there are approximately 1,500 oak barrels – American (650), French (700), and Hungarian (150).

The wine is a blend of 70% Tempranillo (from vineyards planted in the 1960's and 70's), 18% Graciano, and 12% Garnacha (from vineyards planted in 1930). Whole-berry, alcoholic fermentation was in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks, while malolactic fermentation was initiated in oak barrels. The final wine is aged in French and American oak barrels (2nd and 3rd use) for 20 months before bottling, unfiltered. Note: the minimum ageing requirement for Crianza wines is 12 months.

Our tasting note: Clean and bright – deep garnet core, with a slight burgundy/purple rim. The nose is of ripe, dark fruit aromas – Bing cherry, plum (prune), and wild raspberry – with well-integrated vanilla oak notes, and a touch of dark chocolate, nutmeg, and caramel on the finish. The wine is balanced, medium- to full-bodied, with velvety smooth tannins, balancing acidity, and a nice, persistent finish. 14% alc./vol.

Food match: Will pair well with grilled meats, including lamb dishes.
