Tasting Notes

Fondo Antico is a family-run estate, in western Sicily near the historic port of Trapani, just north of Marsala. Combining modern winemaking technology with the traditions of the region, Fondo Antico produces wines of great character. A combination of Sicily’s bountiful sunshine, gentle Mediterranean breezes, and excellent soil characteristics help to make this possible.

Many of the vines are trained in the ancient goblet configuration; however the more modern Espalier trellising system is starting to take over with newer plantations. Fondo Antico's winemaker is Lorenza Scianna.

Nero d'Avola is Sicily's most planted red wine grape. While its origins are unclear - a synonym for the grape is Calabrese, which suggests it's from Italy's mainland - but since it was named after the town of Avola, in the southwest of the Island, it is considered to be one of Sicily's own.

The wine is made from 100% hand-picked Nero d'Avola grapes, from vineyards with a high proportion of limestone and sand in the soil, at an elevation of 200m amsl. The grapes are macerated on the skins for 10-12 in stainless steel tanks to extract colour and tannins, then fermented for 10 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to capture the unique aromatics and to optimize the elegant features. The wine was cold stabilized and remained in bottle for over a year before release - longer than is typical for this style of Nero d'Avola.

Our tasting note: Bright deep, ruby colour, with rich, vibrant aromas and flavours of sweet cherry, plum, and wild berry, with spicy notes. Dry and medium-bodied, with integrated tannins, balancing acidity and a nice elegant finish.

Pairing suggestions: The regional specialty is risotto al Nero d'Avola e chiodi de garafano (risotto with Nero d'Avola, chopped tuna, onions, mint, and cloves), and it also pairs with grilled and braised meats - including hamburgers on the grill - and Mediterranean-style dishes (couscous). But it's also just a greta wine on its own.
