Azienda Agricola Calatroni Pinot Nero DOC 2016
The Calatroni winery is a small, family-run winery located on the hills of the village of Montecalvo Versiggia in the Versa Valley, in the heart of Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese. The winery was founded in 1964, when Luigi Calatroni, at the end of his tenant-farming contract, bought a vineyard from his former landowner.
In the following years, the winery developed under the guidance of Fausto and Marisa Calatroni. Today, the experience and traditions of the past are enriched by the modern agronomic and oenologic techniques brought by their sons, Cristian and Stefano.
Constant technical improvement has led to an ever-increasing quality of the grapes grown in the estate-owned vineyards (approx. 15 hectares). Calatroni is committed to a sustainable approach, using a minimum of pesticides and herbicides.
With its 4.100 hectares, Montecalvo Versiggia in Oltrepò Pavese (pronounced all-tre-po pah-vay-zee, meaning the area beyond the River Po) has the largest production of Pinot Noir in Italy. The area around Montecalvo is especially suited for growing Pinot Noir, due to the limestone composition of the soils and its favourable wide temperature range between day and night.
The wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes (Burgundy clone), harvested by hand. The grapes are taken quickly to the winery in small baskets, free of oxygen; the pressing of the grapes is soft so to extract only the best aromas. The seeds and stalks are removed from the fermentation to avoid the effect of green tannins, and the fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve the fresh fruit aromas and flavours. After the wine has undergone the alcoholic fermentation, 10% of the wine is aged in 3rd passage French-oak barrique. Approximately 20,000 bottles are produced each vintage.
Our Tasting Note: Bright, cherry-red colour. Classic aromas and flavours of cherry, raspberry, and currant, with earthy notes of red licorice and baking spices. Dry, with bright acidity, soft/sweet tannins, and an elegant/silky finish.
Recommended pairings: Pair with traditional pasta dishes with meat fillings, roasted and grilled meats, including salmon.
