Bodega Tajinaste Canarius Tinto DOP "Valle de la Orotava" 2017
Bodegas Tajinaste was established in 1977, commercializing the Garćia Farráis family vineyards in the Orotava Valley on Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands.
Some of the family’s oldest stocks of Listán negro vines were planted in 1914, using a unique horizontal vine training system known as multiple braided cordon (cordón múltiple trenzado). Newer vineyards use the more common single- and double-Cordon (Royat) trellising systems.
Working with indigenous varieties, the modern winery respects tradition, as well the unique geography - mountains and volcanic soil - of Tenerife, to create wines of great character and individuality. The Enologist is Agustin G. Farráis.
About the Canary Islands: A region of Spain that is geographically and geologically part of Africa. In addition to having a sub-tropical climate, perhaps the Islands’ most unique feature is the volcanic soil, and the ways in which viticulture has adapted to both. Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, mountains (some active and extinct volcanoes), and prevailing winds have created a wide variety of different microclimates, which translates into a diversity of wines. Approximately 80 varieties of grapes have been planted, with at least three varieties that are native to the Islands, and many vines are on original stock since the vines were never affected by phylloxera.
This is a dry red wine from 90% Listán negro (pronounced lee-STAN neh-gro) and 10% Vijareigo negro (pronounced vee-ha-ray-gro neh-gro) grapes grown on hillside vineyards at a height of 600 metres above sea level. These are old vines - 40% are planted using the multiple braided cordon system, and the remainder on modern trellis’s - and the grapes are hand harvested at ideal ripeness. The grapes are cold macerated for 4 days prior to fermentation (total maceration is 12 days), and both alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks. About a third of the wine is aged for two months in French and American oak barrels, before bottling in February. Alc./vol. 13.2%
Listán negro is widely planted in the Canaries, particularly Tenerife, and originated in Spain’s Castille region where it is called Listán Prieto. It is the black-skinned version of Palomino grape, and is genetically identical to the Mission grape that was introduced to the Americas by Spanish explorers. Vijariego negro is more rare, usually a blending grape, and thought to have been brought to the Canaries from Andalusia.
Our Tasting Note: Deep, dark ruby colour, with violet hues. Highly aromatic, reminiscent of dark red fruits - blackberry, currant, and blueberry - with smoky/ peppery/balsamic notes. Smooth, with balancing acidity, medium- to firm tannins, and a clean finish.
Pairing suggestions: This wine will pair well with charcuterie, veal, grilled pork, tapas, burgers, steak, earthy vegetable dishes, and medium/hard cheeses.
