Tasting Notes

Located in Cuzcurrita de Rio Tirón (in La Rioja Alta), Bodegas Tobía (pronounced toe-BEE-ya) is an artisanal winery owned and operated by one of Spain’s top winemakers, Oscar Tobía. Oscar holds a Master’s degree in Oenology and Viticulture and is considered part of Rioja’s new generation of winemakers who combine professionalism, the spirit to embrace regional traditions, and the best of what new technology can offer.
Family-owned vineyards constitute 30 hectares, with a further 55 hectares coming from controlled local vineyards. Vineyards are planted to Tempranillo (73%), Garnacha (15%), Viura (8%), and Malvasia (3%). Production of the winery began in 1995.

Total production is approximately 500,000 bottles from a new state-of-the-art winery. In the cellar there are approximately 1,500 oak barrels – American (650), French (700), and Hungarian (150).

Alma translates into soul, and this wine is what Oscar feels is the true expression of Rioja (rosé). This was the first barrel-fermented rosé in Rioja, and still remains the standard for the region.

The blend is 55% Tempranillo, 35% Graciano, and 10% Merlot grapes, hand-picked from three vineyard sites across Rioja Alta, Baja, and Alavesa, and vinified separately. The vines are between 20 and 50 years of age, and low yielding (35hl/Ha). The must is filtered after 36-hours skin contact under a protective layer of CO2.

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in large oak barrels for approximately 30 days, at low temperature (12-15 Celsius), then the wine is aged in new, fine-grained French-oak barrels for an additional five months with daily battonage. After maturation, the final assembly of the three varieties takes place. The wine is gently fined and filtered and matured in bottle for three months prior to release. Less than 40 barrels were produced from this vintage.

Our tasting note: Clean and bright – rich, vibrant raspberry-red colour. The nose is intense, and complex, with aromas and flavours of wild strawberry and raspberry with notes of cherry, coffee, and a slight smokiness. It is dry, full, smooth, fresh, and balanced on the palate with a elegant, long, and silky finish. Recommended serving temperature: 10ºc.

Alcohol: 13.6%/vol. Residual sugar: 2.4 gr./L. Total Acidity: 6.12gr./L.

Pairing recommendations: Will pair with more fuller-style dishes than traditional rosé wines (treat like a Pinot Noir), and well-suited to pork, lobster, sushi, paella, and spicy flavourings.
