Tasting Notes

The wines of Ribeiro are some of the oldest in Spain, having been poured to the Roman Caesars who occupied Galicia, in northwest Spain, in the second and third centuries. Grapes have been cultivated in the area ever since, culminating in period of the XIth to XVIIth centuries when the monks of St. Clodio's Monastery near Vieite dedicated themselves to the cultivation of vines.

The Ribeiro DO is also one of the smallest and oldest regions, comprising approximately 3,000 hectares of vineyards and registered in 1957. It is experiencing a renaissance of late, as people discover the distinctively, fresh and bright aromas and flavours of the indigenous white wine grapes.

In 1990, Lorenzo Rolando de Franciso purchased the Priorato de Viete and it's surrounding vineyards that were part of the Monastery, and opened Pazo de Viete in 2006. Vineyards comprise 8 Ha -- planted to mainly Treixadura (pronunced tray-sha-dura) -- and are perfectly located to optimize the ripening of the grapes. The terraces are sheltered from the cold north winds, the altitude is between 100 and 200 metres abmsvl, and comprise mainly granitic soil with sandy texture. The winery is state-of-the-art, with a capacity to produce 80,000 litres of wine

Viña Farnadas is a blend of 85% Treixadura, 10% Godello, and 5% Albariño, Loureira, and Torrontés grapes. Fermentation is typical of white wines -- in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks -- and the finished wine remains in tank until bottling. As in other parts of Galicia, bottling was later for the 2013 vintage (June 3rd, 2014), as the white wines took longer to reach their full expression. Alc./vol. 13.5%, with just a touch (less than 1%) residual sugar in the finished wine.

Tasting Note: Bright, pale lemon colour. Lively/intense floral nose, with aromas and flavours of stone fruits (white peach and apricot), citrus, and pineapple, and notes of jasmine. Medium-bodied, with refreshing acidity and and long/balanced/clean finish.

A great wine for a glass on its own, or paired with seafood, freshwater fish, white meats, and cheeses. Also pairs well with charcuterie and a good contrast to richer-style appetizers.
