A Priorat Sampler from Cartoixa de Montsalvat
The Cartoixa de Montsalvat winery is known for high quality, rich, and elegant Priorat wines made from organically-grown, old-vine Garnacha (Grenache) and Carignan. Priorat, in Catalonia (south of Barcelona), is considered one of Spain's top wine regions and one of only two regions to hold the distinguished DOCa status.
This mixed case is made up of two bottles each of three different wines from Cartoixa.
Wine #1 Montclass 2017
A blend of 60% Grenache (from 30-40 year old vines), 20% Carignan (from 80-100 year old vines), and 10% Syrah, from low-yield vineyards on mountain slopes. The grapes macerate for 15-20 days, then fermented in stainless-steel tanks. The blend is then made, and the wine is aged for 10 months in new French-oak barrels.
Complex aromas and flavours of black fruits - blackberry, cherry and blueberry - with toasted sweet oak, mocha, vanilla spice, and black pepper notes. Intense, yet balanced, with good acidity, sweet, ripe tannins, and long finish.
Pair with rilled and braised meats - beef and lamb - earthy vegetarian dishes, and spicy Moroccan dishes.
Wine #2 Montgarnatx 2013
A blend of 65% Grenache (form vineyards between 30-40 year old vines) and 35% Carignan (from 60+ year old vines), hand-harvested from low-yielding vines. The grapes macerate for 15-20 days, then fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation is complete, the blend is made and the wine ages for 12 months in new French-oak barrels (225 litre size). Alc./vol. 15.4%
Complex aromas and flavours of dark red fruits - plum, wild strawberry, and raspberry - with floral notes of cinnamon spice, liquorice, caramel, and tobacco. Intense, balanced, with good acidity, sweet, ripe tannins, and long, evolving finish. We'd recommend decanting this wine for about an hour.
Pair with grilled and braised meats - beef and lamb - earthy vegetarian dishes, and Morrocan-style spicy dishes.
Wine #3 Montsalvat 2007
A rare, 100% Carignan (from 80-100 year old vines) hand-harvested from the low-yielding “Les Tosses” vineyard. The vines are planted on steep terraces with predominantly granite soils with quartz shards. The grapes macerate for 15-20 days, then fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. After malolactic fermentation is complete, the wine is aged for 17 months in new French-oak barrels (225 litre size). Alc./vol. 14.5%
Complex and evolving aromas and flavours of black and red fruits - blackberry, plum jam, and wild blueberry - with smoky notes of fig, anise, leather, and black pepper notes. Intense, with strong depth of flavour, good acidity, sweet, ripe tannins, and long, elegant finish.
Pair with grilled and braised meats - beef and lamb - and earthy vegetarian dishes.
