Le Sommelier Mixed Case: Fuller Reds For Fall
Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:
Olivier Rivière Rayos Uva 2018, Rioja DOCa, Spain
This fresh, youthful, organic rojo is Rivière’s take on a Bourgogne Rouge, sourced from fruit grown in the sandy, gravelled, alluvial soils of Rioja Baja. This vintage blends 50% Tempranillo with 30% Graciano, and 20% Garnacha. Modern in style and intent, with wild red fruit, savoury salami and fine spices, bound by supple tannins. This was vinified without oak to let the purity of the fruit shine.
Dei Rosso di Montepulciano DOC 2018, Tuscany, Italy
The Dei family produced their first wines from their estate in the heart of the historic appellation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1985. Now run by Caterina Dei, the estate has become one of the leaders in the region, producing lush, perfumed, fruit-driven wines that are exquisite expressions of the local Prugnolo clone of Sangiovese, blended with small amounts of Canaiolo, Mammolo, and Merlot. Pouring a bright ruby, this is a fresh and fruit-forward medium bodied wine, flush with cherry and plum. Though the palate is round and soft, there are firm, fine tannins, leading this to a lengthy finish, and a few years in the cellar.
Maçanita Red 2018, Douro Valley DOC, Portugal
Brother and sister winemakers Antonio and Joana came together to make wines under the Maçanita label, their family name. This is a blend of touriga nacional, sousão and a field blend of old vines, all from the Cima Corgo, and is native fermented with twenty days on skins before being split between neutral barrel and tank for one year. Lovely wild plum, blueberry, sapid thorns, earthy cassis, sour cherry on a tighter, bright palate, with softly grippy tannins holding the sides. Stony and fresh, ideal drinking now.
Jorche Soltema Primitivo del Salento IGP 2017, Puglia, Italy
Dalila and Emanuela Gianfreda are fifth generation winemakers at Jorche, overseeing the 31 hectares of vines surrounding their Salento estate. This Primitivo grows in the red, iron-oxide rich sandstones throughout the estate. This aged 9 months in barrels and 3 months in bottle prior to release. Soft and sun-ripened cassis, wild plum and dark cherry flood the full palate, bound by cushy tannins and finishing with savoury baking spices.
Alpha Box & Dice Tarot Grenache 2019, McLaren Vale, South Australia
Assuli Ruggiero Syrah Terre Siciliane IGP 2016, Sicily, Italy
From Sicily’s clay and limestone laced soils, this Syrah was fermented and rested in stainless to preserve freshness. Sunripened black cherry, and violets are seasoned with ample black pepper, flooding a fuller, dense palate, finishing with a lick of anise and cool mint. Smooth and primed for drinking now.
Estimated time of delivery is 3-10 business days.
