Donatella Cinelli Colombini Il Drago e le 8 Colombe IGT Toscana Rosso 2013
New vintage, new grape blend, new name and new packaging for the Il Drago produced by Donatella Cinelli Colombini. It used to be called “Il Drago e le Sette Colombe” and has become “Il Drago e le 8 Colombe” with the arrival of the new consultant wine maker Valérie Lavigne.
The doves represent women, and refers to the female cellar staff, and support staff at the winery, which is a revolutionary work environment for Italy. On the flip side, the Dragon emphasizes a male presence, in the person of Carlo Gardini, Donatella’s husband, who is a great wine aficionado.
The arrival of Valérie Lavigne has created new ideas and concepts surrounding the blending of Italian grape varieties to make high quality wines.
It is from this that the desire to emphasize the Sagrantino grape arose. This varietal is greatly used in Umbria, which is just 20km away from Fattoria del Colle and belongs to the same geographical area. At the moment, they are cultivating only a few rows of Sagrantino, but soon there will be a whole new vineyard. The decision to use Sagrantino for the “Il Drago e le 8 Colombe” is a small step towards wines with a stronger identity, which will continue in the future.
The change of grape varieties is interpreted as a search for elegance, harmony, and fullness. The wine results softer, more refined, more modern. A change in quality fortunately also began with an extraordinary harvest in 2010, considered to be a five star vintage capable of making great wine.
Varietals in blend: 60% Sangiovese (the same clone used for the Brunello), 20% Merlot, 20% Sagrantino.
Vinification: in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The fermentation began rapidly and cellar master Barbara Magnani had to cool the grapes with dry ice as soon as they reached the cellar.
Ageing: 18 months in French oak tonneaux.
Prodiuction: 30,000 bottles.
Aroma: fine, full, complex with net perfumes of small red fruits.
Taste: Full bodied, harmonious, intense, persistent, well balanced tannins. The alcohol content balances a solid acid and polyphenolic structure with a very pleasant and powerful finish.
2013 vintage hasn’t yet been reviewed, however this is the review for the 2010 vintage:
“The 2010 Il Drago e le 8 Colombe is one of the most interesting wines to come from Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s Tenuta Il Colle in the largely unexplored Trequanda area of Tuscany. Originally the “dragon” in the label name was a reference to consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini and the “8 doves” represented the many women who run this dynamic estate. The wine is dark and penetrating with pressed cherry, blackberry, spice, tobacco, rosemary oil and balsam herb. It offers a good amount of complexity and a brooding austerity to match. The finish shows sharp contours and a warm blast of alcohol.” - 91 pts (Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Sept 2015)
