Fattoria La Lecciaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012
La Lecciaia is situated in Vallafrico, bordering some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards of Montalcino (Biondi-Santi and Barbi). The land extends to over 60 hectares: 15 hectares of which are under vine, and more than half of that is used for the production of Brunello.
Purchased in 1983, the winery has been rebuilt and is equipped with modern winemaking technology, yet La Lecciaia still adheres to the old traditions of Brunello. The wines have excellent character and flavour thanks to the particular vineyard situation, soil structure, and excellent climate.
All wines under the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG status are made from 100% Sangiovese grapes. Traditionally the clone of Sangiovese was called “grosso” or large (vs. piccolo meaning small, which is the main clone in Chianti), however this is changing as new clones are introduced to the region. Brunello is still considered the “best” version of Sangiovese in the world due to its ageing requirements, unique soils, and climate.
Vintage Rating: 2012 was rated a 5-star vintage by the Consorzio di Brunello (the governing association for the region). “Five stars” is considered the best rating the Consorzio can give, meaning the conditions were near perfect for producing the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine.
Made from 100% estate-grown fruit and following traditional red wine fermentation, this wine for approximately 3 years in large Slavonian oak casks (not barrique), with a further 6 months refinement in bottle before release. 14% all./vol..
Our Tasting Note: Deep ruby/cherry colour, with complex, earthy aromas of Bing cherry, wild raspberry, plum, and blackberry fruit with slight sandalwood, cinnamon spice and mocha notes. Richly elegant, medium to full-bodied, and well structured on the palate. Nice silky finish; the fruit, acidity, and fine tannins are all well balanced.
Recommended Pairings: Complements fuller-bodied foods, particularly braised or grilled meat dishes and pasta with a robust meat sauce. Works well with “earthier” ingredients like mushrooms. Decanting is recommended.
