Fattoria La Lecciaia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG (half-bottles) 2014

Tasting NotesLa Lecciaia is situated in Vallafrico, bordering some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards of Montalcino (Biondi-Santi and Barbi). The land extends to over 60 hectares: 15 hectares of which are under vine, and more than half of that is used for the production of Brunello. Purchased in 1983, the winery has been rebuilt and is equipped with modern winemaking technology, yet La Lecciaia still adheres to the old traditions of Brunello. The wines have excellent character and flavour thanks to the particular vineyard situation, soil structure, and excellent climate. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is made from 100% estate-grown Sangiovese grapes, hand-harvested the last week of September, the first week of October. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks for 15-20 days. Minimum aging requirements for the Consorzio are 2 years in oak barrels and 4 months in bottle, however this wine spent over 3 years in larger oak barrels (not barrique) and 6 months in bottle before release. Alc./vol. 14.5% Our tasting note: Classic mahogany colour, with complex, earthy aromas and flavours of dark cherry, plum, and raspberry fruit with cedar/sandalwood, tobacco, and mocha notes. Elegant, this wine is medium to full-bodied, and well structured on the evolving palate. Smooth on the finish; the fruit, acidity, and fine tannins are all well balanced. Half (375ml) bottles offer a great opportunity to try a Brunello, without the cost of opening a full bottle. Menu matches: Pair with earthier-style dishes (including mushrooms), game (venison), steak, short-rib, and meat-based pasta sauces. |
