Bodegas Tobía Rioja Gran Reserva 2014
Located in Cuzcurrita de Rio Tirón (in La Rioja Alta), Bodegas Tobía (pronounced toe-BEE-ya) is an artisanal winery owned and operated by one of Spain’s top winemakers, Oscar Tobía. Oscar holds a Master’s degree in Oenology and Viticulture and is considered part of Rioja’s new generation of winemakers who combine professionalism, the spirit to embrace regional traditions, and the best of what new technology can offer.
Family-owned vineyards constitute 30 hectares, with a further 55 hectares coming from controlled local vineyards. Vineyards are planted to Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura, and Malvasia. Production of the winery began in 1995.
Total production is approximately 500,000 bottles from a new state-of-the-art winery. In the cellar there are approximately 1,500 oak barrels – American, French, and Hungarian.
This Rioja Gran Reserva is made from 93% Tempranillo and 7% Graciano grapes, sourced from vineyards with rocky and clay-limestone soil at altitudes between 530m and 570m abmsl, in Rioja Alta. The Tempranillo is from three estate plots, one planted in the 1920s, with a predominantly Atlantic climate, while the Graciano is from a plot planted in the 1960s, with more Mediterranean-style influences.
The grapes receive a long 28-day temperature-controlled whole-berry maceration (after de-stemming), with regular over pumping in “smart” tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak casks.
The Gran Reserva is actually a selection of the best barrels of the Reserva wine, which is aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels (2nd use) for 24 months, with periodic agitation every four months. It spends a brief time in new oak barrels before bottling, unfiltered, then remains in bottle for another 15 months before release. Production is limited.
Tasting note: Intense cherry red core with garnet rim Complex deep dark fruit aromas – black cherry, plum, blackberry, and wild blueberry – with integrated spicy notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, cloves, vanilla spice, and cinnamon. The wine is balanced, full-bodied, fleshy, with full smooth tannins, and a very long elegant finish. Alcohol: 14.5%/vol. RS: 2.7gr/L.
Pairing notes: Roasted/grilled/braised red meats, stews and aged cheeses with ham. Drinking nicely now, this wine will reward those with patience for 10+ years.
