Tasting Notes

La Lecciaia is situated in Vallafrico, bordering some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards of Montalcino (Biondi-Santi and Barbi). The land extends to over 60 hectares: 15 hectares of which are under vine, and more than half of that is used for the production of Brunello.

Purchased in 1983, the winery has been rebuilt and is equipped with modern winemaking technology, yet La Lecciaia still adheres to the old traditions of Brunello. The wines have excellent character and flavour thanks to the particular vineyard situation, soil structure, and excellent climate.

Made from 100% estate-grown, hand-harvested (Sangiovese grosso)grapes. Alcoholic fermentation took place in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks for 15-20 days. Minimum aging requirements for the Consorzio are 2 years in oak barrels and 4 months in bottle, however this wine spent over 3 years in larger Slavonian-oak barrels (not barrique) and 6 months in bottle before release. Alc./vol. 14.0%.

Vintage Rating: 2015 was rated a 5-star vintage (out of 5) by the Consorzio di Brunello (the governing association for the region). “Five stars” is considered “exceptional”, with prospects for long-lived wines.

Our tasting note: Classic deep cherry colour with slight garnet rim, with earthy aromas and flavours of Bing cherry, plum, black currant, and dark raspberry fruit with cedar, cinnamon, and mocha notes. Richly elegant, this wine is medium to full-bodied, balanced, and with a silky finish. Should be good for another 8-10 years.

Food matches: Pair with earthier-style dishes, including braised (short ribs) and grilled red meats, mushroom-based dishes, and tomato-based meat sauces.
