Tasting Notes

La Lecciaia was purchased in 1983 and is situated in Vallafrico, bordering some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards of Montalcino (Biondi-Santi and Barbi). The land extends to over 60 hectares: 15 hectares of which are under vine, and more than half of that is used for the production of Brunello. The winery has been rebuilt and is equipped with modern winemaking technology, yet La Lecciaia still adheres to the old traditions of Brunello. The wines have excellent character and flavour thanks to the particular vineyard situation, soil structure, and excellent climate.

This wine is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes sourced from estate vineyards in Montalcino, the source of the famous Brunello di Montalcino. The soils are light and stony, and well-draining, and the planting density is medium using traditional Spurred Cordon trellising.

The grapes were hand-harvested in late September, early October, when the reached peak ripeness and maturity. Vinification was in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks for 15-20 days, then aged for a minimum of 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks, then in bottle until released to the market. 13.5% alc./vol., less than 1 gr/L RS.

Our tasting Note: Ruby red in colour, with slight garnet tinges (typical of Sangiovese). Earthy aromas of wild berries and blackberry, with floral notes of herbs, mocha and baking spices. Full-bodied, and rich on the palate. Smooth tannins, with a long finish. It may need a few minutes to open up.

Menu Matches: Complements fuller-bodied foods like steak, braised meat dishes, and game. Also pasta with meat-based sauces, and pizza.
