Agricola La Bastida - Bodegas Exeo Cifras Tinto Rioja Reserva DOCa 2017
This family-run winery is located in the old Jewish quarter of Labistada, in Rioja Alavesa, in a building that dates back to the 13th century. Beneath the building is a network of underground caves (some excavated in the 1400s) which form a natural cellar for approximately 500 barrels. Generations of the family have been involved in winegrowing and winemaking, and their love and passion for their land and wine lives on with the current owner, Carlos Fernandez Gomez.
Carlos works with approximately thirty hectares of vineyards which face the Toloño mountain, tended with the greatest care by wine growers from Labastida and San Vicente. He feels the key to get the best results from the vineyards is the right choice of soil and grape variety, plus their orientation together.
Exeo is a personal project of Carlos, where he makes special wines based on Garnacha. All the grapes come from high-altitude vineyards (+700 meters) in the Toloño Mountains, and using concrete eggs and different sized barrels for ageing.
This wine is made from 100% Garnacha (Grenache) grapes hand-harvested from the La Huerta vineyard, with predominantly clay soils. The vines have an average age of 25+ years. Alcoholic fermentation in cement tanks, then 90% of the wine is aged in an egg-shaped concrete vat, while the rest is aged in 2nd-passage French-oak barrels.
Alc./vol.: 13.5%. Approximately 7000 bottles produced.
Tasting note: Bright cherry-red colour, with a slight purple rim. Aromas and flavours of dark, wild fruits - cherry, raspberry, and blackberry- with notes of mocha, herbs, and caramel. Medium-bodied, dry, balanced, fruit notes, with a long, finish.
Pairings: Grilled and braised meat dishes, rice dishes, tapas, and barbeque ribs. Good match with rich and strong flavours.
