Tasting NotesThe winery can be traced back to 1885, when an ancestor of the Prada family, planted the Godello first vines on the high, slate hillsides of the Sil valley. The winemaking traditions of the current owners originate with José Ramón Gayoso, who, contrary to the custom of the time established the first vineyard planted entirely with the native Godello grape. Gayoso expanded with small parcels of vines, or ‘Pezas’, carefully choosing the best sites in and around the village of Portela de Valderroas. In subsequent years many parcels were sold to other growers, leaving only the Pedrouzos estate within the family. In 2001 the current generation of the family began to buy back the small parcels, spurred on by the potential for Godello, and now Mencia. This wine is made from a careful selection of 100% Mencia grapes, hand-harvested from old bush vines (up to 30 years old) grown in hillside sites (400-550 metres) on the slate-rich soils of the Sil Valley. The winery follows organic farming techniques but the vineyards are not certified. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, using indigenous yeasts. Aged in stainless steel tanks for 9 months, racked several times, and released with about 3-5 months bottle refining. A classic expression of the Atlantic influence and slate soils. Alc./vol. 13.5%; R.S. 1.5 gr./L. Our tasting note: Violet-tinged, cherry-red colour. A classic Galcian-style wine, with aromas and flavours of vibrant cherry and ripe red berries (raspberry) and cranberry, with smoky-mineral, (slight) green pepper, and violet notes. Refreshing on the palate with a clean, finish. Menu match: An easy wine to drink on its own, and an ideal pairing with charcuterie, fresh cheeses, and light- to medium-weight meat (pork, chicken) dishes, and vegetarian options. |
