Tasting Notes

Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:

Lanciola Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2018.
In Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, the winery has 14 hectares, 10 of which are devoted to vineyards sitting on shale soils at approximately 300 meters. This Sangiovese is splashed with 10% of other local grapes, and fermented and rested in a mix of stainless and very large old oak barrels. Forest-scented berries, scented violets dart through this smooth, medium bodied palate, bound by silky tannins and carried by a fresh acidity to the finish.

Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2019.
Chianti Rufina is the smallest appellation in Chianti, extending across 750ha. This is 95% Sangiovese, joined with tips of Canaiolo, Colorino, and Malvasia Nera from well-drained, dry and stony, north and north-west facing vineyards. These 15-40 year old vines grow in medium density clay and limestone at 200-300m. Fermentation and maceration occurs in stainless over 25 days with native yeast, before aging in 25hL French casks for 12 months. Morello cherry, wild raspberry, rose petals, pipe tobacco and a dusting of pink peppercorn glides along the medium-bodied palate, textured with layers of savoury stones, and lightened via vibrant acidity. The stony, cool vineyard site is well expressed here.

Tenuta di Bibbiano Chianti Classico 2019.
The 220 hectare Tenuta di Bibbiano is one of Chianti Classico’s historical wine properties, mentioned in an official document of 1089 as the Castello di Bibiune. In the 1960s it was just one of 36 wineries producing and bottling wine under their own labels. Today, Tommaso Marrocchesi Marzi manages the estate and since 2006 has also served on the Board of Directors of the Consorzio. He owns the winery jointly with his brother Federico. They organically farm 27 ha of vines on slopes between 270-300m, across a range of soils including calcareous clays, alberese, and limestones. Sourced from all their vineyards, this Sangiovese fermented for 3 weeks in stainless, prior to aging one year in cement vats. Black cherry, raspberry and cranberry is scented with subtle eucalyptus and ample dusty earth. The wine's tannins are long and smooth, backed by bright acidity and ending with a warming finish.

Tenuta Fanti Rosso di Montalcino 2019.
Made from 15-20-year-old vines, the wine was fermented for 20-25 days in stainless before ageing for one year in oak barrels, 300L French oak barriques, and 3,000L oak barrels. The wine then aged in a bottle for 7 months before release. Perfumed raspberry, worn wood, cherry fills the slight frame, edged with grippy tannins, and finishing with a drying rasp of spices. Best enjoyed with grilled lamb or sausage.

Sesti Grangiovese Toscana Rosso 2019.
The Sesti family uses the Sangiovese grapes that don't go into their Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino for this ready-to-drink medium bodied red. The wine spends one year in medium-sized oak barrels. Savoury cherry, herbs, sundried tomato and leather is lifted across a bright palate, framed by subtle wood. Good structure and harmony in this baby Brunello.

Donatella Cinelli Colombini Il Drago e le 8 Colombe 2018.
From Trequanda’s Fattoria del Colle, at 400m on hills of predominantly limestone and sandstone comes this Supertuscan blend of Sangiovese (60%), and equal parts Merlot, and Sagrantino. This was vinified in stainless before 18 months in large barrels and in 5-7 hl French oak tonneaux. Ripe and dark fruited, with blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry, plum blossoms on a full palate, structured taut with the soils and acidity, taking this to a humming, stony, spiced finish. Tannins are firm and grippy, giving this a few years ahead in the bottle. 7500 bottles were made.

Critical Praise

For the love of Sangiovese! We’ve put together this case of special Tuscan reds, each showing a different style, terroir, and expression of Sangiovese and Sangiovese-based blends.
