Tasting Notes

In the heart of the Penedes, near the town of Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, Agustí Torelló Mata produces a range of high quality Cava (Spanish sparkling wine), highly regarded by some of Spain’s most famous restaurants. Perhaps most notably for Kripta, unqiue for its extended ageing and handmade amphora shaped bottle. Agustí Torelló Mata is family owned and run; each of the four Torelló siblings has an active role in the business.
While there is movement to use the more fashionable higher producing grapes like the chardonnay and pinot noir in the Cava blend, Agustí Torelló stands firmly with tradition and flavour, by using only Macabeo, Xarello, Perellada, and Trepat (for the Cava rosé). The production is very limited due, among other things, to the age of their vines.

2011 Cava Kripta Brut Nature Gran Reserva

Kripta, was created in 1979 by Agustí Torelló Mata. This unique Cava has been described by Michel Bettane, an influential wine critic in France, as a sparkling wine comparable to the very best champagnes: “Wonderful and delicate walnut aromas, refined texture and bubbles, very seducing finish. The perfection of Cava or almost, and a wine that shall surprise many people.” He included Kripta in his book of “The Best 100 Wines of the World” along with 4 other sparkling wines (all Champagne). Robert Parker (Wine Advocate) awarded the 2003 vintage 94 points, the highest score ever given to a Cava.

Label designed by Rafael Bartolozzi.

Made using local indigenous grapes – Macabeo (45%), Xarel-lo (20%), and Parellada (35%) – from 70+ year old vines, following organic methods. Production follows the traditional method of making champagne; the second fermentation takes place in the bottle (under natural cork) over a period of eight years, approximately the same amount of time as some of champagne’s great marques.

11.5% alc./vol.; 0.6 g/l residual sugar (bottled brut nature).

Each bottle is individually packaged in a decorative box, and includes the number of the bottle and the date of disgorgement. A rare, and highly sought-after Cava.

Our Tasting Note: Pale straw-yellow colour, with golden hues and a slowly-evolving, very fine, and persistent mousse. A clean and crisp bouquet reminiscent of hazelnuts, fresh citrus, and ripe fruits – pear and yellow apple - with notes of buttered toast, vanilla spice, and truffle. Very elegant and delicate with a lingering, clean finish.
