Tasting Notes

Each six pack contains the following wines:

1 x Champagne Gosset Grande Réserve Brut NV, Champagne

Founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Champagne Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. For 17 generations Gosset was family owned, but in 1993 it was sold to the Cointreau family from Charente, owners of Frappin Cognac. The Grand Reserve Brut is sourced almost entirely from premier cru and grand cru vineyards (10 villages in total), with a cepage of 40/40/15/5 Chardonnay / Pinot Noir / Pinot Meunier /Pinot Blanc, fermented in stainless, and with no MLF. Classic and stately, a tightly perfumed nose of brioche, lemon blossoms, green apple, pine nut opens this flagship brut. Though the palate still feels tightly structural and and highly strung, nearly four years on the lees base this wine. River stones and white flowers hum along the grippy finish. Dosage 8 g/L.

1 x Champagne Leclerc Briant Brut Réserve NV, Champagne

This house was founded in 1955 when Bertrand Leclerc married Jacqueline Briant. They were an early adopter of organic practices back in the 1960’s, and were one of the first to bottle single-vineyard Champagnes in the 1970’s. In the late 1980’s, Bertrand and Jacqueline’s son, Pascal, began integrating biodynamic principles and part of the production has been Demeter certified since 2003. Today, enologist Hervé Jestin, known for his biodynamics / bioenergetics oversees the wines of the house and its near 30ha of vines, plus another 20ha of organically farmed contract fruit. This wine, making up 75% of production, is a bit of a misnomer: there are no reserve wines (it's entirely the 2014 vintage) and it's actually extra-brut, with 4/gl dosage. This blend of 40/40/40 pinot noir / pinot meunier / chardonnay was native fermented in stainless and oak (the latter 20%) before going into bottle for 3 years on lees. Weighty and confident, with yellow fruits, red apple, patisserie, and almond, closing out with a grippy and fresh finish. Lovely density and integration here.

2 x J.M. Sohler Crémant d'Alsace Blanc de Blancs Brut 2016, Alsace

Situated 30 km south west of Strasbourg, J.M. Sohler is a boutique estate family producer nestled in the hamlet of Blienschwiller. To the north lies Nothalten, noted for its Rieslings, especially Grand Cru Muenchberg. To the south lies Dambach-la-Ville, considered by many to be the best wine village in the Bas-Rhin. The two houses pictured on the label are the home and winery of the Sohler family. The caves, where all the wine is matured, date back to 1563. This blanc de blancs is a blend of Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois, with a minimum of 15 months on lees. Perfumed white blossom, pear, yellow apple is soft and plush on the creamy, medium-bodied palate, threaded with subtle anise, and finishing with a bright snap. Smart and welcoming; drinking well now.

2 x Rolet Crémant du Jura Blanc Brut NV, Jura

The Rolet estate was created by Mr. Désiré Rolet in 1942, with just 4 hectares, and was taken over by his children, Eliane, Bernard, Guy and Pierre in 1958. They grew and ran the estate to be the second largest in the Jura until 2018 when they took retirement and sold to the Devillard family, well known for their Bourgogne estates. This blend of Chardonnay, Savagnin, Pinot Noir, and Poulsard was sourced from various marl-based vineyards in and around Arbois, and was whole cluster pressed with at least 6 months on lees prior to secondary fermentation. The wine rested a minimum of 3 years on lees prior to disgorgement, with 10 g/L. Creamy red and brisk green apple, crystalline lemon, grapefruit pith, stony toast, and a kiss of vanilla pod perfumes the lingering finish. The creaminess is well balanced off with a bright spire of lemony acidity.
