Tasting Notes

This family-run winery is located in the old Jewish quarter of Labistada, in Rioja Alavesa, in a building that dates back to the 13th century. Beneath the building is a network of underground caves (some excavated in the 1400s) which form a natural cellar for approximately 500 barrels. Generations of the family have been involved in winegrowing and winemaking, and their love and passion for their land and wine lives on with the current owner, Carlos Fernandez Gomez.

Carlos works with approximately thirty hectares of vineyards which face the Toloño mountain, tended with the greatest care by wine growers from Labastida and San Vicente. He feels the key to get the best results from the vineyards is the right choice of soil and grape variety, plus their orientation together.

Tierra is a family project, with three generations or winemakers working with traditional grape varieties of the Rioja Alavesa.

This wine is made from 100% Malvasia grapes, hand-harvested in small (14kg) boxes from the oldest Pago of the family - named “Cuba Negra”- in south Labistada. This Pago was planted in 1910.

The grapes are destemmed and macerated for 24 hours. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in a 750 litre Austrian-oak foudre, and remains in the vat for 12 months - half of the time on the lees. Alc./vol.: 14.0%.

Tasting note: Bright straw colour. Intense, somewhat smoky aromas and flavours of stone fruits - peach and yellow plum - and warm citrus with floral/mineral notes of honey, laurel, aromatic herbs, nutmeg, and brioche. Medium- to full-bodied, dry, medium acidity, some mineral notes, with a long, elegant, finish.

Pairings: Shellfish, fresh- and salt-water fish, vegetarian dishes (artichoke), rice dishes,, white meats (grilled chicken and pork) and mature cheese. Good match with rich and strong flavours. Serve around 12-15 celsius.
