Tasting Notes

Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013.
In 1962, Primo Pacenti founded Azienda Agricola Canalicchio di Sopra, in Toscana's stunning Siena countryside. Situated in the Northeast side of the Montalcino hill, the farm extends for nearly 60 hectares, 20 hectares of which are cultivated with vines and 2 hectares with olive groves. From the very beginning, Primo believed in the land, and its suitability for high quality, elegant, and age worthy wines. The first bottle of Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino was produced in 1966, and in 1967, Canalicchio di Sopra was one of the twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Today, three generations live and work on the estate, inherently connected to the lands, and united by Primo’s aim: to produce the highest quality Montalcino possible.

"Canalicchio di Sopra's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is tight and firm at its core, with qualities that bode very well for its aging potential. That compact core is surrounded by many thick layers of dark fruit and spice that are expressive and expansive. Those outer layers give the wine softness and some immediate accessibility, even at this early stage in its life. All summed up, this is a very complete and characteristic Brunello that offers stunning quality for medium or long-term drinking. Drink 2020-2035.” - 96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, February 28, 2018.

Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello di Montalcino 2013.
Donatella Cinelli Colombini left her family’s estate in 1998 to start her own, made up of Casato in Montalcino, and Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda. Along with the vineyards and with the farmhouses to be renovated, Donatella received a quantity of Brunello di Montalcino, and so she needed a cellar master to see to its barrel-ageing. She called the Enology School in Siena, asking for a good student to hire. They answered that they had none; cellar masters had to be booked years in advance. They mentioned, however, that they had many female cellar masters available, since no important winery wanted to employ them. Donatella didn’t just hire a woman cellar master for the project. The entire staff is women, including the head winemaker, and Donatella has become a beacon for women in the wine industry, not only in Italy, but globally.

“Aromas of rose petals and ripe strawberries follow through to a full body. Layered and chewy with ripe tannins and a flavorful and intense finish. Serious and structured. Drink in 2020.” - 94 points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

Fanti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015.
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52ha of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards, 110ha are olive orchards with 8,500 olive trees, 80ha are used for seed plots, and 70ha are forests. In the early 1970s, Filippo Fanti became leader of the company, and refocused its direction towards high quality, starting with the soils. He sustainably replanted the vineyards and olive trees after a careful selection of the most suitable plots within the estate. His daughter Elisa joined the estate in 2007, and continues the family’s vision.

“There's a beautiful interplay between bright, primary florals, such as rose petals and tulips and dust, hay bale and dried raspberries. The palate suggests a ripe, powerful persona with chewy, juicy tannins and a fine line of pretty acidity. Best ever. Drink from 2022.” - 95 points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
