Tasting Notes

The talha (amphora) is a vestige of the Roman influence on winemaking in the Alentejo region. This talha-fermented white is a revival of an ancient practice that adds greater complexity and regional identity to wine. The wine was produced from hand-picked grapes from old vines from two unique Portuguese varieties, Roupeiro and Antão Vaz. The result is a highly individual white with strong primary fruit and an additional dimension from the talha of earth, almost chemical notes. Back to the future!

“The 2010 BRANCO DE TALHA is not unique, but it is a bit unusual—a wine 100% made in amphora. It is a blend of Antao Vaz and Roupeiro. Its earthy nose is interesting at first and integrates overall. It feels almost tannic at times, with fine persistence on the finish, good depth and concentration and a tightly wound demeanor early on. The more I drank this, the more I liked it; it held its own nicely as it evolved. This new bottling may hold a few years, but I think it will always be at its best now and in the next year or so.
