Tasting Notes

One of the oldest sites of Wachau, which was established by monks of Salzburg and Bavarian monasteries, from which it takes its name. A deep-soiled plot in the Loiben basin, where the washed-away terrace rock mingles with brown earth and Danube sand. Wines with deep, spicy fruit and gentle minerality are typical of this site.

Critical Praise

"An intense and impressively layered federspiel (the middle classification of ripeness at harvest in the Wachau), nicely balanced between fruit extract in the white peach and white grapefruit spectrum, and sprightly acids. Notably lighter and more vibrant than the usually deep and ripe Pichler style, but none the worse for it, with very good length and depth. Another fine wine from this regional leader for enjoyment over the next half dozen years or so. Tasted April 2014." - 91, John Szabo, MS, WineAlign.com

"From the Loiben basin where eroding, rocky Danube sands mix with gravel to produce lacey and textured Grüner Veltliner. This Federspiel (classified as wines between 11.5–12.5 per cent with a minimum must-weight of 17 degrees) shows more richness, viscosity and body than many with a pronounced spicy edge on top of the highly floral citrus zest. It gives the strange sensation of chewing spicy gum. A Grüner of good temperament beseeching the imbiber to have more than just one taste. Tasted April 2014." - 91, Michael Godel, WineAlign.com

"This is medium weight, solid fairly compact gruner with green apple flesh, flinty minerality and fennel - but all very subtle. Some gruner pepper and pear on the palate that was rather weak on the nose. Good struture; excellent length. Tasted April 2014" - 90, David Lawrason, WineAlign.com
