Tasting Notes

Fragrant yet subtle wild red berries, forest floor and rosehip aromatics. Fresh cranberry fruit up-front with herbaceous and tea-leaf notes in the mid-palate followed by a smokey-mineral note on the finish. Light in weight with surprising extract, elegance and length.

If there exists an indigenous Italian equivalent to Pinot Noir it would be Pelaverga Piccolo and it flourishes solely in the communes of Verduno and LaMorra in the Barolo district. Castello di Verduno is the first estate to vinify the grape as a single variety and essentially save it from extinction, hence the Verduno Basadone is known as the flagship wine of the varietal.

The name Basadone originates from the local dialect meaning "Lady kisser" because the wine made from the Pelaverga grape is said to have aphrodisiaic qualities. Given it's a smooth and savoury, easy drinking wine that typically yields 13.5 to 14% alcohol/vol. there's no doubt such a myth would ensue.
