Donatella Cinelli Colombini Leone Rosso ORCIA DOC (Organic) 2020
Tasting NotesThe denomination to which this wine belongs, the DOC Orcia, was created in the year 2000 in the hilly area between the more famous Brunello and Vino Nobile territories. Production area: Toscana, Trequanda, Fattoria del Colle Varietals: Sangiovese 60%, Merlot 40% Grape harvest: from September 27th till October 5th. The grapes were hand-picked and transported to the winery in 20 Kg crates in less than half an hour. After being de-stemmed the best grapes were chosen on a sorting table. Vinification: in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The contact between must and skins went on longer than usual, between 18 and 25 days. Quantity produced: 20.000 bottles Colour: intense and brilliant ruby red Aroma: fine, rich, complex even though its winy fragrance is enriched with hints of red berries Taste: medium build, soft tannins that are balanced by the fruit and the alcohol. Analysis: alcohol 14% vol; Tot. SO2 90 mg/l ; extracts 30,5 g/l; tot.ac. 5,4 g/l; vol.ac. 0,55 g/l; Serve with: apt for the whole meal, it is exquisitely matched with meats and aged cheeses. Service: room temperature (18-20°C), in crystal tulip shaped wine goblets. Home ageing: 4/5 years after the harvest. Keep the bottles lying down in a dark and cool place. The rampant lion on the label is the symbol of Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s ancestors, who built Fattoria del Colle in 1592. The wine is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Merlot grown in the vineyards surrounding the estate of Fattoria del Colle, in the Orcia DOC. Created in 2000, the Orcia DOC is the valley which lies between Montalcino and Montepulciano. It was fermented in stainless steel vats and left on the skins for 18-25 days, then matured for 18 months in French oak tonneaux. 1,650 cases produced. |
Critical Praise(for 2019) “This is a delicious sangiovese and merlot blend from a leading Brunello producer. It shows fairly deep, youthful colour and fragrant ripe, complex and well integrated nose of almost jammy blackberry, red cherry fruit, fine herbs, spice and vanillin. It is medium weight, open-knit, almost plush and refined with fine tannin. The length is very good to excellent. Tasted October 2022.” - 91 points, David Lawrason, WineAlign.com (for 2019) “A juicy and fruity red with lots of blackberry and cherry character. Hints of vanilla, too. Medium body, round tannins and a fruity finish. A little one-dimensional. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.” - 90 points, James Suckling, August 8, 2022. |
